My Khe Beach Da Nang: Things to Do & Travel Tips

Mỹ khê beach

My Khe Beach Da Nang is one of the easiest beaches to visit if you’re staying in the city. It’s close to central Da Nang, easy to reach, and has a long stretch of sand for swimming, walking, or simply spending some time by the sea.

The beachfront is well developed, with hotels, restaurants, cafes, and a wide promenade just behind the sand. That makes My Khe especially convenient if you want a beach experience without traveling far from the city.

For a first trip to Da Nang, I’d make time for My Khe Beach, whether for an early swim, a sunrise walk, or a few relaxed hours by the sea. In this Triplory guide, I’ll cover the best time to visit, what to expect, what to do, and a few practical tips before you go.

My Khe Beach at a Glance

If you’re planning a visit, these are the main details worth knowing first.

My tip: If your schedule allows it, visit early at least once. My Khe feels very different before the day gets hot, when locals are already swimming, walking, exercising, and meeting friends along the beach.

Is My Khe Beach Worth Visiting?

Yes. For most first-time visitors, My Khe Beach is worth visiting.

Its biggest strength is how easy it is to fit into a Da Nang trip. You don’t need to plan a long transfer, pay an entrance fee, or set aside an entire day. You can spend a couple of hours here, then continue to Son Tra Peninsula, Marble Mountains, the Han River, or somewhere else in the city.

Why You Might Like My Khe Beach

My Khe gives you a lot of flexibility.

You can come for a proper beach session with swimming and a lounger, or simply walk along the shoreline for an hour before breakfast.

The beach is also close to hotels, seafood restaurants, local eateries, coffee shops, and the An Thuong area, so it’s easy to combine beach time with food or another part of your itinerary.

Another reason I enjoy My Khe is the local atmosphere.

Early in the morning and later in the afternoon, you’ll see Da Nang residents swimming, jogging, exercising, playing sports, and meeting friends. The beach feels like part of everyday life in the city rather than a tourist attraction that exists separately from it.

What My Khe Beach Is Really Like

My Khe is an urban beach, and I think that is worth understanding before you go.

Vo Nguyen Giap Street runs directly behind the beachfront. Hotels, apartments, seafood restaurants, cafés, and other businesses line much of the coast.

That means you won’t feel isolated from the city. In the busiest sections, especially around popular swimming areas, the beach can feel lively and crowded.

For me, that doesn’t take away from the experience. The convenience is part of what makes My Khe work so well for travelers.

If one section feels too busy, walking farther along the coastline usually gives you more space.

Who Might Not Enjoy It as Much?

My Khe may be less appealing if your idea of a beach holiday is complete quiet, very little development, and few other people around.

Travelers looking for a private resort-style beach may also prefer a different setting.

Weather matters too. When the sea is rough, My Khe becomes much less attractive for swimming, even if the beach itself is still open.

My Verdict for First-Time Visitors

For a first visit to Da Nang, I’d include My Khe.

It works particularly well for:

  • Travelers who enjoy swimming
  • Morning walkers and runners
  • Families who want facilities nearby
  • Visitors short on time
  • Anyone who enjoys sunrise
  • Travelers interested in seeing local beach life
  • People staying around My An or An Thuong

You don’t need to stay all day. Around 2 – 4 hours is enough for most visitors, unless you’re planning a longer beach day.

Which Part of My Khe Beach Should You Visit?

My Khe forms part of a long, almost continuous stretch of coastline, so you don’t need to search for one exact “best” spot.

The section I’d choose depends on what I wanted to do.

Best Area for Swimming

For swimming, stay close to designated swimming zones with lifeguard coverage.

The central sections along Vo Nguyen Giap Street are usually the easiest for first-time visitors. These areas tend to have better access to:

  • Lifeguards
  • Safety flags
  • Public showers
  • Changing areas
  • Beach services
  • Loungers and umbrellas

The busiest section is not always the prettiest, but I’d prioritize safety over finding an empty stretch of sand.

Currents and seabed conditions can vary along the coast, so don’t assume a quieter area is automatically a better place to swim.

When you arrive, check the flags and follow any instructions from the lifeguards.

Best Area for Sunrise and Walking

For sunrise, walking, or running, I prefer moving north toward Bien Dong Park and the Pham Van Dong Beach area.

The beachfront feels wide and open, with clear views out to sea and Son Tra Peninsula visible to the north.

Early morning is especially good here. The temperature is easier, the sand near the waterline is firmer, and there’s usually plenty of activity without the beach feeling too intense.

If photography is one of your priorities, arrive before sunrise rather than showing up after the sun is already above the horizon.

Best Area for Cafés and Restaurants

If food and drinks matter just as much as the beach, stay closer to My An and An Thuong.

The streets behind the southern part of My Khe have plenty of:

  • Vietnamese restaurants
  • Seafood
  • Specialty coffee
  • Breakfast and brunch cafés
  • International restaurants
  • Bakeries
  • Bars and casual nightlife

If you’re staying in An Thuong, the setup is especially easy. You can walk to the beach in the morning, come back for breakfast or coffee, and head out again later without needing a taxi.

Best Area for a Quieter Beach Experience

If you want more space, keep walking away from the busiest central sections.

Heading south beyond the main My An area generally brings you into quieter stretches as the coastline continues toward Non Nuoc.

The trade-off is convenience.

You may find fewer vendors, fewer public facilities, and less obvious lifeguard coverage.

I’d be comfortable walking or relaxing in those quieter areas, but I wouldn’t swim unless I could see a clearly designated swimming zone nearby.

My Khe, My An and Pham Van Dong: What’s the Difference?

The names can be confusing when you first look at Google Maps or hotel listings because the coastline doesn’t have clear physical boundaries.

In practical terms:

  • Pham Van Dong Beach usually refers to the northern section around Bien Dong Park
  • My Khe Beach is commonly used for the central beachfront and is sometimes used more broadly for the whole area
  • My An Beach is farther south, close to the An Thuong neighborhood

When you walk along the sand, the transition between them is difficult to notice.

For planning, I’d keep it simple:

  • Swimming: central My Khe
  • Sunrise and walking: Pham Van Dong / Bien Dong Park
  • Food and cafés: My An / An Thuong
  • More space: farther south

There’s no reason to visit every section unless you simply enjoy long beach walks.

Best Time to Visit My Khe Beach

For most travelers, the best time to visit My Khe Beach is during Da Nang’s drier months and either early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Both the season and the time of day make a noticeable difference.

Best Time of Year

April to August is generally the easiest period for a beach-focused visit.

You’re more likely to get sunny weather and conditions that work well for swimming, relaxing, and spending time outdoors.

From around October to February, Da Nang can experience wetter weather, stronger winds, and rougher sea conditions.

That doesn’t mean the beach is unusable throughout those months, but I’d be much more cautious about planning around swimming.

Even in the drier season, check the sea when you arrive. Beach conditions can change from one day to the next.

Early Morning

If you don’t mind waking up early, around 5:00 – 7:30 AM is one of the most interesting times to experience My Khe.

It works well for:

  • Sunrise
  • Walking
  • Running
  • Photography
  • Swimming when conditions are suitable
  • Seeing local beach life
  • Avoiding stronger daytime heat

The atmosphere is one of the main reasons I’d recommend going early.

You’ll see groups exercising, people swimming before work, runners along the sand, and families or friends gathering while the city is still relatively quiet.

If sunrise is your main reason for going, check the sunrise time the night before and arrive a little earlier.

Late Afternoon

Around 4:00 PM until dusk is another good window.

The heat begins to ease, and the beach becomes lively again as more people return after the middle of the day.

Late afternoon works well if you want:

  • A swim
  • A beach walk
  • Volleyball or other activities
  • Time with family
  • A more social atmosphere
  • Dinner nearby afterward

If you’re staying around My An or An Thuong, the timing is particularly convenient because you can leave the beach and walk straight to a restaurant or café.

Should You Visit at Midday?

You can, but I wouldn’t choose late morning to mid-afternoon for a long beach session.

There is very little natural shade on the open sand, and the heat can become uncomfortable.

The sand itself can also get hot enough to make barefoot walking unpleasant.

If midday is the only time that fits your itinerary, use an umbrella or shaded area, drink plenty of water, and bring proper sun protection.

Sunrise or Sunset?

For My Khe, sunrise is the better beach experience.

The coastline faces east, so you can watch the sun rise directly over the sea.

Sunset is different. The sun goes down behind the city, so you don’t get the classic view of the sun dropping into the water.

Late afternoon is still pleasant because the temperature is lower and the beach becomes active again.

My preference is simple: sunrise for the experience, late afternoon for convenience.

Can You Swim at My Khe Beach?

Yes, you can swim at My Khe Beach, but I wouldn’t assume conditions are safe every day.

The sea can be calm and comfortable during good weather, while rougher periods may bring stronger waves and currents.

Whenever I swim at My Khe, I stay inside the designated areas and check the flags before going into the water.

What Are the Swimming Conditions Like?

During calmer weather, My Khe can have gentle waves and a gradual sandy entry that works well for recreational swimming.

Conditions can change, though.

From around October to February, seasonal weather can bring rougher seas and stronger waves.

The sandy seabed may also shift after bad weather, so a section that felt shallow during one visit may not feel exactly the same later.

That’s why I wouldn’t judge swimming conditions only by looking at the beach from a distance.

Where Should You Swim?

Stick to clearly marked swimming zones with lifeguard coverage.

These sections may be marked with:

  • Safety flags
  • Signs
  • Buoys
  • Swimming boundaries

Lifeguards may also direct swimmers toward specific sections depending on conditions.

If they tell people to move or return to shore, follow the instruction.

When Should You Avoid Swimming?

I’d stay out of the water when:

  • Red warning flags are displayed
  • Waves are obviously strong
  • A storm is approaching
  • Rough weather has recently passed
  • Lifeguards are warning people not to enter
  • You’re unsure whether swimming is allowed

If a lifeguard whistles or gestures for you to return to shore, come back immediately.

Seeing other people in the water does not guarantee that conditions are safe.

Is My Khe Beach Safe for Children?

Children can enjoy My Khe, but the answer depends on the sea conditions that day.

Shallow water near the shore can look inviting, but currents and changes in the seabed may still cause problems for small children or inexperienced swimmers.

For families, I’d stick to a few basic rules:

  • Use designated swimming areas
  • Choose a section with lifeguards
  • Keep children within close reach
  • Avoid rough water
  • Follow safety warnings immediately

I wouldn’t describe My Khe as “safe for children year-round.”

A better approach is to check the conditions every time you visit.

What Can You Do at My Khe Beach?

You don’t need a long list of activities to enjoy My Khe.

For most people, swimming, walking, watching the sunrise, and relaxing on the sand are enough.

If you want something more active, water sports may also be available depending on the weather and current operators.

Swimming and Relaxing

Swimming is one of the main reasons people visit the beach.

When conditions are suitable, head to a designated swimming zone and stay within the marked area.

If you’d rather spend time out of the water, some of the busier sections have loungers and umbrellas available for rent.

A few hours can pass easily between swimming, reading, walking, and stopping for a drink.

Watch the Sunrise

Sunrise is one of the experiences I recommend most at My Khe.

The view over the sea is part of it, but I think the early-morning atmosphere matters just as much.

The beach is already active with people exercising, swimming, jogging, and meeting friends.

For photography, the softer light and reflections on the wet sand can also make early morning more interesting than the middle of the day.

Walk or Run Along the Beach

My Khe is well suited to walking and running because the coastline continues for a long distance without major interruptions.

You can walk on the promenade or closer to the water where the sand is firmer.

For a longer route, head north toward Bien Dong Park or south toward My An.

Try Water Sports

Depending on weather, sea conditions, and current operators, you may find activities such as:

  • Surfing
  • Stand-up paddleboarding
  • Jet skiing
  • Parasailing
  • Banana boat rides
  • Windsurfing

Availability can change, so I wouldn’t build an entire day around one activity without checking first.

Before booking, confirm:

What to CheckWhy It Matters
Current sea conditionsSome activities may stop when the water is rough
Activity durationKnow how long the session or rental lasts
Safety equipmentCheck that appropriate gear is provided
Total priceConfirm the full amount before paying

If the sea looks rough or lifeguards are restricting water access, I’d leave the water sports for another day.

My Khe Beach Facilities and Costs

One advantage of My Khe is that the beach itself is free.

Most of what you pay for is optional: loungers, umbrellas, showers, food, parking, or activities.

Is My Khe Beach Free?

Yes. My Khe Beach is a public beach with free access.

There is no general entrance ticket to walk along the sand, watch the sunrise, or swim in public designated areas.

If you’re happy with a simple swim and beach walk, your visit can cost almost nothing.

Sun Loungers and Umbrellas

Loungers and umbrellas are available around some of the more popular sections.

A set may cost roughly 40,000 – 80,000 VND, although prices can vary by location and time.

I’d confirm the price before sitting down.

If you’re only planning a short swim or walk, renting one may not be necessary.

Showers, Toilets and Changing Areas

Public showers, toilets, and changing areas are available around the main beach access points.

You’re more likely to find them near:

  • Popular swimming zones
  • Lifeguard stations
  • Main entrances
  • Larger beachfront sections

Some facilities may charge a small fee.

Don’t expect exactly the same quality or availability along every part of the beach.

What Else Might You Pay For?

Optional costs can include:

  • Water sports
  • Food and drinks
  • Beach equipment
  • Souvenirs
  • Massage services
  • Photography services

Prices for privately operated services may vary.

For anything beyond a small snack or drink, I’d confirm the total cost before agreeing.

Where to Eat and Drink Near My Khe Beach

Food is one of the easiest parts of spending time around My Khe.

You can leave the sand and find seafood, local Vietnamese food, cafés, brunch, or international restaurants within a short walk or ride.

Seafood

Seafood restaurants are easy to find along Vo Nguyen Giap Street, particularly in the evening.

Many display live fish, crab, shrimp, shellfish, and other seafood.

Some items are sold by dish, while others are priced by weight.

Before ordering, check:

  • Whether the price is per dish, 100 grams, or kilogram
  • The weight before cooking
  • Cooking method
  • Any additional preparation charges
  • Estimated total bill

If seafood is sold by weight, I prefer knowing the approximate total before anything goes to the kitchen.

Beachfront restaurants are convenient, but I wouldn’t automatically assume they offer the best value.

If price matters, compare a couple of places or look farther inland.

Vietnamese Food

For a more casual meal, head into the streets behind the beachfront.

Around Nguyen Van Thoai, My An, and nearby side streets, you can find local options such as:

  • Mi Quang
  • Bun Cha Ca
  • Banh Xeo
  • Rice dishes
  • Noodle soups
  • Small family-run restaurants

After an early morning at the beach, I often prefer a simple local breakfast or lunch to a large seafood meal.

It’s quicker, usually easier on the budget, and gives you another chance to eat something connected with everyday Da Nang.

Cafés and International Food

For cafés and international food, An Thuong and My An are the most convenient areas.

The neighborhood has plenty of:

  • Vietnamese coffee
  • Specialty coffee
  • Breakfast and brunch cafés
  • Bakeries
  • Vegetarian and vegan food
  • Pizza and Western food
  • Casual international restaurants
  • Bars and evening venues

If you’re staying nearby, the setup is very easy: beach first, then breakfast or coffee on foot.

For a longer dinner, I’d look at seafood.

For value, head into the smaller streets for Vietnamese food.

For the widest range of cafés and international options, An Thuong is the easiest choice.

How to Get to My Khe Beach

My Khe is only around 3 – 5 km from central Da Nang, which is one of the main reasons it fits so easily into a short itinerary.

From Central Da Nang

From the city center or Han River area, allow around 10 – 15 minutes by Grab, taxi, or scooter, depending on traffic.

For most visitors, Grab is the easiest option because the fare is clear and you don’t need to think about parking.

A taxi works well too.

If you’re already comfortable riding in Da Nang, a scooter gives you more freedom to stop at different sections of the beach.

From Da Nang Airport

From Da Nang International Airport, the trip to My Khe usually takes around 10 – 15 minutes by car in normal traffic.

Grab and taxis are the easiest choices.

If you arrive with suitcases, I’d go to your accommodation first rather than heading directly to the beach.

Public beach facilities aren’t designed for secure luggage storage, and carrying large bags around the sand becomes inconvenient very quickly.

From Han Market and the Han River

From Han Market, Bach Dang Street, or the Han River, the beach is just across the city.

A Grab or taxi can usually get you there in around 10 minutes, depending on traffic.

Walking is possible, but I wouldn’t choose it during the hottest part of the day.

The distance can be around 3 – 4 km, and parts of the route have limited shade.

From Hoi An

From Hoi An, allow roughly 40 – 50 minutes by car, depending on traffic and your starting point.

A private car, taxi, or ride-hailing service is the easiest option.

I wouldn’t travel from Hoi An to Da Nang solely for My Khe Beach.

Hoi An already has nearby beaches such as An Bang, so the journey makes more sense when My Khe is combined with other Da Nang attractions.

You could pair it with:

  • Marble Mountains
  • Dragon Bridge
  • Han River
  • Son Tra Peninsula
  • Central Da Nang

Motorbike Parking

If you arrive by scooter, you’ll usually find staffed parking areas near the main beach access points.

Parking is generally inexpensive, but I’d still check the fee before leaving the bike.

Keep your parking ticket or claim slip until you return.

Is My Khe Beach a Good Area to Stay in Da Nang?

Yes. For many leisure travelers, the My Khe Beach area is one of the most convenient places to stay in Da Nang.

You’re close to the beach, surrounded by restaurants and cafés, and still only a short Grab ride from central Da Nang.

Why Stay Near My Khe Beach?

The biggest advantage is being able to walk to the water.

If you want an early swim or sunrise, walking from your hotel is much easier than arranging transport before dawn.

There’s also a wide range of accommodation nearby, including:

  • Budget hotels
  • Apartments
  • Mid-range hotels
  • Larger beachfront hotels
  • Properties with sea views

The area also works well for travelers who want food and services within walking distance.

What Are the Downsides?

Staying near the beach does involve a few trade-offs.

You’ll be across the river from places such as:

  • Han Market
  • Bach Dang Street
  • Museum of Cham Sculpture

Reaching those parts of central Da Nang usually means taking a short Grab or taxi ride.

Vo Nguyen Giap Street is also a busy road. Hotels directly facing it may have more traffic noise, and crossing the road can feel hectic during busy periods.

The immediate beachfront is quite tourism-oriented, with lots of hotels, restaurants, tour services, and other visitor-focused businesses.

If beach time isn’t important to you, staying closer to the Han River may suit your trip better.

Beachfront or An Thuong: Where Should You Stay?

An Thuong is only a few blocks behind the southern part of My Khe, so the choice is less dramatic than it may appear on a map.

Both areas can still give you easy beach access.

Stay Closer to the Beachfront If You Prioritize:

  • Fast beach access
  • Sea views
  • Sunrise from your hotel
  • Larger beachfront properties
  • Convenience for families
  • Short beach-focused stays

Stay Around An Thuong If You Prioritize:

  • Restaurants
  • Cafés
  • Bars
  • Smaller streets
  • Walkability
  • Apartments
  • Everyday services
  • Longer stays

Which Area Would I Choose?

For a short first visit, I’d stay close to My Khe without necessarily choosing a hotel directly on Vo Nguyen Giap Street.

A hotel a few blocks inland can give you quick beach access while keeping cafés and restaurants close and reducing some of the traffic noise.

For a longer stay, I’d lean toward An Thuong.

You’re still close enough to walk to My Khe every day, but the neighborhood is more convenient for meals, coffee, laundry, and other everyday needs.

How to Fit My Khe Beach Into Your Da Nang Itinerary

One of My Khe’s strengths is that you don’t need to build an entire day around it.

The beach works well at the beginning or end of a sightseeing day.

My Khe Beach + Son Tra Peninsula

A simple route:

Sunrise at My Khe → breakfast → Son Tra Peninsula → Linh Ung Pagoda

Start early with a walk or short swim, then have breakfast nearby before heading north toward Son Tra Peninsula.

I like the sequence because it keeps the beach visit relaxed rather than trying to fit it into the hotter part of the day.

If you’re combining My Khe with Son Tra, around 1 – 2 hours at the beach can be enough.

Marble Mountains + My Khe Beach

Another easy combination:

Marble Mountains in the morning → lunch → My Khe Beach in the late afternoon

I’d visit Marble Mountains first while you still have plenty of energy for the stairs and walking.

After lunch, head back toward the coast and spend the late afternoon at My Khe.

The two stops work well together because the morning is more active while the beach gives you time to slow down afterward.

My Khe Beach + Dragon Bridge

For a day that runs into the evening:

My Khe Beach → dinner → Dragon Bridge → Han River

Spend the late afternoon swimming or walking, then have dinner before continuing toward Dragon Bridge.

If you’re visiting on a weekend, check the current Dragon Bridge show schedule beforehand so you don’t end up rushing dinner.

After the bridge, you can continue along the Han River.

Which Combination Would I Choose?

For a first trip:

  • My Khe + Son Tra Peninsula – good if you enjoy early starts and coastal scenery
  • Marble Mountains + My Khe – good for sightseeing followed by a slower afternoon
  • My Khe + Dragon Bridge – good for an easy plan that runs from afternoon into evening

If My Khe is only one part of the day, 1 – 2 hours can be enough.

If you want to swim, relax, rent a lounger, and spend more time by the water, allow around 2 – 4 hours.

Practical Tips Before Visiting My Khe Beach

A few small things make the experience easier.

Swim Only in Designated Areas

Use marked swimming zones and check the flags when you arrive.

Sea conditions can change, and currents are not always easy to see from the sand.

If lifeguards restrict swimming, follow their instructions.

Keep Valuables Secure

Avoid leaving your phone, wallet, passport, or camera unattended while you swim.

I usually bring as little as possible to the beach.

If you’re traveling with someone, taking turns swimming is often the easiest solution.

Protect Yourself From the Sun

There isn’t much natural shade across the open beach.

Bring:

  • Sunscreen
  • Drinking water
  • A hat
  • Light clothing

If possible, avoid spending several hours on the sand during the hottest part of the day.

Confirm Prices Before Renting Anything

Ask the price before using:

  • Loungers
  • Umbrellas
  • Water sports
  • Beach equipment

For water activities, also ask how long the session lasts and what safety equipment is included.

A quick conversation before starting avoids most misunderstandings.

Carry Some Small Cash

Some independent vendors and beach services may prefer cash.

A few smaller Vietnamese notes are useful for:

  • Drinks
  • Showers
  • Parking
  • Loungers
  • Small rentals

I wouldn’t rely entirely on international cards.

Final Thoughts: Is My Khe Beach Worth Your Time?

For a first trip to Da Nang, My Khe Beach is easy to recommend.

The beach is close to the city, free to access, and flexible enough to work as anything from a quick sunrise walk to a longer afternoon of swimming and relaxing.

What makes My Khe work for me isn’t that it feels remote or untouched. It’s the opposite. The beach is part of everyday Da Nang, with locals exercising in the morning, restaurants and cafés just behind the coast, and the rest of the city still within easy reach.

If I were planning another short stay, I’d visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon, stay within designated swimming areas, and combine the beach with another nearby part of Da Nang rather than using an entire day for it.

That’s where My Khe fits best: not as a complicated destination you need to plan around, but as one of the easiest parts of Da Nang to enjoy.
